If you don’t know Sophia Busacca, you’re missing out!!!
I’m talking about a girl… Who will literally reach out to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
I used to tell her something I was passionate about and proceed to receive 35 text messages from 35 people aligned to that passion.
Throughout college - I randomly (and frequently) connected with unknown numbers, including someone she met at a bar the night before who happened to have “the best recs” for the country I was traveling to. (They went once).
Regardless! Sophia knew something before most of us did.
People are powerful.
:)
Okay. Some context. My mom called my sister a couple days ago with a plan to change her company culture. (Easy, I know).
And Sophia - prone to action - took it upon herself to email Adam Grant. If you don’t know who Adam Grant is, that’s okay.
He’s a really cool professor at Penn who co-wrote a NYT bestselling book with Sheryl Sandberg. (On top of four other bestselling books around psychology and work culture and productivity).
AND YEAH.
Adam Grant responded!!!
He wants to help change my mom’s company culture.
How??? Idk???
But that man is great. And my sister is too.
So I’m writing this post to say, shoot your shot!
It’s soooo easy to find emails and direct numbers. Email the people you look up to.
And just know - if you meet Sophia at a bar and ask for her number, odds are you’ll end up with mine.
And that’s the skinny.
Subject line: Penn graduate seeking feedback for parent's business
Email:
Hi Dr. Grant,
My name is Sophia Busacca. I graduated from University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 2018. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA where my parents own an alarm company. When I was young, I knew I wanted to be in healthcare after watching my Aunt Sara suffer from colon cancer. I also grew up hearing about central station, alarms, installation, profit and loss statements, etc. At Penn, I was able to combine my passion for healthcare and business by minoring in healthcare management.
Today, while working as a Registered Nurse at UCSF Health, I am pursing a Masters in Health Analytics, learning to code, taking business courses, and listening to my professors quote your work in my Navigating Organizations class.
My parents have been in business for over 40 years - they are the busiest they have ever been. They are smart, willing to adapt, know how to market (using my triplet brother, sister, and me as mini ads), and are great to their customers and employees.
My parents are currently changing the way they provide feedback to their employees and allow their employees to grow.
If you have any evidence based advice for a small company, I am sure they would love to hear it!
Thanks so much for all the positivity you bring the world!
Sophia Busacca BSN, RN
MSQM: Health Analytics Candidate 2023

BTW - Dr. Grant did get back to me! And we have been in a culture change, feedback frenzy, business buzzing rampage - and it's paying off :)
Oh how I love this! So spot on about Sophia. She listens intently and then shares intentionally.
