I can’t stop thinking about this post from Sahil Bloom so I wanted to share it below.
The Say-Do Gap: A Question to Reset Your Life
Here's a question I like to ask myself when I feel stuck:
If an outside observer watched me for a week, how serious would they say I am about achieving my goals?
Think about it.
It's easy to convince ourselves that we're fulfilling our responsibilities. That we're doing what's necessary to build the life we want. That we're showing up with energy and focus on a daily basis.
But what would an unbiased observer see?
Would they see consistency, discipline, and courage?
Would they see avoidance, fear, and distraction?
There are two types of priorities in life:
The priorities you say you have
The priorities your actions show you have
I call the gap between the two the Say-Do Gap.
And here's the uncomfortable truth: For most of us, it's significant.
We say we want to build the business, write the book, get in shape, or be more present with our loved ones.
We start the year with these exciting, ambitious goals. We write them down, tell everyone about them, and envision how great our life will be when we achieve them.
But somewhere along the way, we slip up.
A tiny slip begets another one. A tiny crack grows larger. It's too small to notice, and it's too easy to delude yourself into thinking that you're still on track, that you're still committed.
But a silent shift has taken place:
The reality of our days belies the ambition of our years.
The Say-Do Gap has been created––and until we recognize it, we will fall short of living the life we want.
So, reflect on the question this week:
What would an outside observer say about how serious you are about your goals?
Don't tell me your priorities. Show me them. The answer is found in the action.
If an outside observer watched me for a week, how serious would they say I am about achieving my goals?
Now for my commentary since I have a lot of thoughts on this post…
I keep thinking about the hard things. You know that phrase when the going gets tough, the tough get going. How many of us actually get tougher? The lies we tell ourselves become the truths we live by.
Right now, I’m at a stage in my life where all I want to do is give up. I’ve cried a lot in 2025. But then I remember, we become bitter or better. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to “get going.”
What are the steps we can take to actually hit our goals???
Write everything down that you want to do during the day and do it.
I have this daily calendar invite for my “6am to 6pm.” I make a checklist of all the personal and professional things I need to do for the day and start checking. Sometimes we just have to get out of our own way!!! It’s the small wins :)
For example - I’ve had a Canva subscription for four months. Every month, my credit card gets charged $30, and every month, I don’t do anything with it. (Hence why the header of this newsletter is a picture of my grandma from 50 years ago lol). My goal this morning was to use Canva (even if just for five minutes).
I used a picture of my grandma because I keep thinking about the people who “make it.” I don’t just mean the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs of the world. I mean our hometown heroes, the people in our community who do it all (aka our moms, the best example of list builders). Plus, I think that picture of my grandma is very chic.
I’ll end this newsletter with a quote I keep think about.
“Everyone has oceans to fly, if they have the heart to do it. Is it reckless? Maybe. But what do dreams know of boundaries?” - Amelia Earhart
Build the check list and bridge the say-do gap!
And that’s the skinny.
Beverly!! 😍
A brilliant way to start my day! Thank you for this. So many oceans to fly…❤️
